Blood Pressure Guidelines

Citing new evidence that blood-vessel damage begins at blood pressure levels that used to be considered normal, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) established new clinical practice guidelines for the prevention, detection, and treatment of high blood pressure. The Institute established a new category called "prehypertension" to help motivate people to take action early on to avoid later health problems.

Classification of blood pressure for adults age 18 years and older

Category  Systolic (mm Hg)   Diastolic (mm Hg)
Normal* less than 120 and less than 80
Prehypertension 120-139 or 80-89

Hypertension
Stage 1 140-159 or 90-99
Stage 2 160 or higher or 100 or higher

* If systolic and diastolic pressures fall into different categories, the blood pressure status is determined by the higher classification.

** The classifications in this table are for people who are not on medicine for high blood pressure and do not have an acute short-term illness.
