Why are my measurements higher at the doctor's office?
A medical phenomena known as White Coat Hypertension causes many individuals' blood pressure to be higher when taken in a medical office setting. Why? Because many times the stress and anxiety (both factors known to raise blood pressure) of being in the doctor's office may cause blood pressure to raise as much as 20-50 points higher than normal. This makes home monitoring essential in accurately determining true blood pressure. Another helpful tool is to keep a blood pressure measurement diary over time. Bring this diary with you to your doctor's office to assist him/her in your treatment.
